Scintillation by Xavier Chassaing

Although we’re trying to find and publish new and up-to-date projects on the Mushroom, we felt like we can’t skip this brilliant video from 2009! This is an experimental film made up of over 35,000 photographs by Xavier Chassaing. It combines an innovative mix of stop motion and live projection mapping techniques. 3D animation that’s projected on objects, equipment used and editing was done by Xavier.

“What I have was an apartment, a small DSLR camera, a small computer and a small video projector. I also made a contraption which looks like a motion control but with the particularity of moving extremely slow that allowed me to take sequences of pictures with long exposure (1 frame per second, with 1 frame exposure.) Even the best camera can not compete with this kind of sensitivity if they shoot at normal speed.”

    Hi Xavier, I’m Renae.

I’m a college student, that is currently working on live projections.

For one of my research assignments i have to find an artist that inspires me and i need to ask them questions.

I’m wondering if i could ask you some questions about your work (:

    Hey Renae,
Luminous Mushroom is not directly related with Xavier (unfortunately!), but he’s one of our favorite too!
You can try contacting him using his email address on his Vimeo page (link is at the bottom of the post)
We’d like to see more of his work too ;)
